Mestria is an AI tutor at mestria.com. Many of our learners are children, so we collect as little as we can and we say plainly what that is. This page explains what we collect, why, who helps us process it, how long we keep it, and how a parent or learner can have it deleted.

Mestria is run by the Mestria team. You can reach us about anything on this page at support@mestria.com.

The short version

  • We collect an email address for the account, a first name for the learner, and the learning record.
  • We keep the text of tutor conversations so a learner can pick up where they left off.
  • We do not show ads, we do not sell personal information, and we do not use learners' conversations to train AI models.
  • We do not ask for a date of birth, home address, phone number, school name or photograph of the learner.
  • A parent or learner can ask us to delete everything by writing to support@mestria.com.

What we collect

Account. The email address you sign up with. If you choose a password, we store only a scrambled (hashed) version of it and cannot read it. If you sign in with Google, Google sends us your email address, your name and an identifier for your Google account. We store the email address and the identifier. We do not store your Google name or picture, and we never see your Google password. We also record the time you confirmed that you are the learner's parent or guardian, or are 13 or older.

Waitlist and invitations. If you join the waitlist, we keep your email address and the date you joined, only so we can tell you when you can create an account. If we invite you, we record that and send you one invitation email. Ask us at any time to remove you from the waitlist.

Learner. The name you choose for the learner. A first name or a nickname is enough.

Learning record. The courses a learner has joined, their progress in each topic, which practice problems they were shown and whether they solved them, results of mock tests, their votes on whether a problem felt too easy or too hard, and how long they studied each subject.

Tutor conversations. The text of what the learner and the tutor write to each other, and a short note the tutor keeps about how the learner learns, so that the next session can continue from the last one. If a learner sends a photo of their written work, the photo is passed to the AI tutor to be read and is not saved by us.

Voice. If a learner speaks to the tutor, the speech is turned into text by their web browser, which may use the browser maker's speech service. We do not receive or store audio. When the tutor reads a reply aloud, the text of that reply may be sent to Google's speech service to produce the audio.

Things you send us. If you use the Report button, we keep what you wrote, the page you were on, and a screenshot only if you chose to attach one. If a learner creates their own course, we keep the goal they typed.

Technical information. We set one cookie to keep you signed in. It is not used for advertising or tracking across other sites. Your browser also stores a few preferences on your device, such as light or dark theme. Our hosting provider handles your IP address and browser type in order to deliver the site and keeps its own short-lived logs. We also use the hosting provider's cookieless analytics to count visits: it records the page, the site you came from, your country and the kind of device, and it does not identify you or follow you to other sites. We do not save IP addresses in our database. To stop repeated sign-in attempts we keep a scrambled value that cannot be turned back into an address and is deleted within two days.

How we use it

  • To run the tutor and remember where each learner is.
  • To show learners and parents their progress and study time.
  • To send account emails, such as a verification code or a password reset.
  • To keep accounts secure and to find and fix problems.
  • To improve our lessons and questions, for example by checking whether a question is rated too easy or too hard.

We do not use personal information for advertising, we do not sell or rent it, and we do not use learners' conversations to train AI models.

Who processes it for us

We use a small number of companies to run Mestria. Each receives only what it needs to do its job.

CompanyWhat it does for usWhat it receives
AnthropicProvides the AI model behind the tutorTutor conversations, including any photo of work a learner sends
NeonHosts our databaseEverything listed under "What we collect" that we store
VercelHosts the websiteRequests to the site, including IP address and browser type
ResendSends account emailsYour email address and the message, such as a verification code
GoogleSign in with Google; reading tutor replies aloudYour sign-in with Google, if you choose it; the text of replies that are read aloud

Anthropic's terms for the service we use say it may not train its models on this content. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.

Children

Mestria is used by children, including children under 13. An account for a child under 13 must be created by a parent or guardian, who confirms this when setting up the learner. Learners aged 13 or older may create their own account.

A parent or guardian can ask to see what we hold about their child, correct it, or have it deleted, at any time, by writing to support@mestria.com. If we learn that a child under 13 is using Mestria without a parent or guardian, we will delete that learner's information.

Where it is stored

Our database and website are hosted in the United States. If you use Mestria from another country, your information is transferred to and processed in the United States.

How long we keep it

We keep account and learner information for as long as the account is open. When you ask us to delete a learner or an account, we delete the learner's name, learning record, tutor conversations and reports within 30 days. Copies may remain in our database provider's backups for a short time after that before they are overwritten. Verification codes expire after 15 minutes. We keep a waitlist email until that person has an account or asks us to remove it.

Your choices

You can ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you or your child, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to support@mestria.com from the email address on the account and we will reply within 30 days. Depending on where you live, the law may give you further rights, such as the right to object to how we use your information or to complain to your data protection authority.

Security

Information is encrypted in transit, passwords are stored only in hashed form, and access to the database is limited to the few people who run Mestria. No online service can promise perfect security. If something goes wrong that affects your information, we will tell you.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. If the change affects how we use information we already hold, we will email account holders before it takes effect.
